Following the successful collaboration with JDC in Haiti, Bonita Trust is again working with JDC to fund two new projects in the Former Soviet Union Republics - Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and Baltic States.
Bonita’s donation will be allocated equally between two projects, and once again overseen by Bonita’s Volunteer Project Coordinator, Richard Parasol.
Elderly Relief -
The first project is focusing on the relief for elderly. Now more than twenty years since the fall of communism, these individuals struggle to survive their last years with the barest dignity. Their state pensions have been devalued by inflation and there are still no social services to compensate for their needs. The donation will help to provide for the basic support: medicines and medical care, food, central heating, homecare for the bedridden and weak, and to conduct their vital home repairs.
Child Poverty Relief -
The second project is centred on the children growing up across the former Soviet Union in poverty: without sufficient food, bed or warm clothing, living in crumbling and mouldy apartments with no central heating. Unemployment, drug abuse, single parenthood and the father's abandonment of the family have all contributed to tremendous risk for the children living across this massive region. The project will provide these individuals with food coupons,
paying for their utility bills, central heating, medicines and medical equipment, vitamins, warm clothing and school supplies.
On his recent trip to the Eastern Europe, Richard Parasol was shocked by the ongoing economic crisis. He knew right there and then that something had to be done to help organize and distribute supplies and aid to these needy individuals.
Richard Parasol is a successful businessman turned philanthropist who was orphaned at 5 years of age when his entire family in Czestochowa Poland was killed by the Nazis in World War II. Miraculously, he was saved by the help of Polish Catholic family, and in 1947 he arrived on Exodus ship to Israel where he served in IDF as an officer until 1957 before moving the United States. Richard, a Volunteer Project Coordinator of Bonita Trust, is the father of Ruth Parasol, the principal benefactor and founding member of Bonita Trust’s International Advisory Board.
Ruth Parasol noted: “Growing up I always admired my dad’s history and his approach to life. I am excited to have him joining Bonita in its missions and strongly believe that his life experiences and wisdom will be great assets to the trust”.
